Greed is good. Sex is easy. Youth is forever.

Amber Heard as: Christie
Additional Cast: Winona Ryder, Kim Basinger
Production Status: Completed
Release Date: April 24, 2009
Directed By: Gregor Jordan
Screenwriters: Nicholas Jarecki (screenplay) and Bret Easton Ellis (novel)
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: R

Sex, drugs, and new wave…Los Angeles in the early 1980s: a time of excess and decadence, and nobody captures it better than Bret Easton Ellis as he coadapts his own acclaimed novel for the screen. Its multistrand narrative deftly balances a vast array of characters, who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman and an amoral ex-con). Connecting his intertwining strands are the quintessential Ellis protagonists—a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs—and one another—with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of an abyss. Gregor Jordan returns with a glamorous and gritty exposé of a culture where too much was never enough. He presents both the seductive and repellent sides of a time when safe sex meant being on the pill. Featuring a truly all-star cast who are at the top of their game, The Informers is a scathing descent into the morally bankrupt core beneath L.A.'s superficial beauty. It is both titillating and horrifying as it captures an era on the verge of an implosion whose effects we are still feeling today.

Heard plays Christie, a sexually promiscuous woman caught up in the decadence of the time and place.

Cast and Crew Quotes

"I thought that I could trust a script based upon the merit of its' writer. And the problem is you can't trust a product based upon the merit of its' script and you can't trust a script based just on the merit of its' writer because there are so many other people who make the movie. And in my case, I did a lot of things in that movie, a lot of scenes in that movie that, other than the ones that made it in. And the point, I guess, because the original storyline had been completely dropped and butchered and malformed, all they had left were nudity shots to bring people in. And so... That's all that made it in."
- Amber Heard

"You know, and I couldn't believe how much it had been changed and altered. And I think that movie could have been something special. And I took a lot of risks in doing it because I believed in the project and I believed in the writer. And it turned out to be something else."
- Amber Heard

"I took on full nudity for that film because the script was based on (Bret Easton Ellis's) book and I wanted to represent the raw intensity, the important character aspects of what makes this story so dark and compelling and twisted. I took a big risk and took a gamble and in this case I lost. The movie turned out to be a big flop. I'm okay with it. I don't regret any movie I have taken on."
- Amber Heard

"It's a tough novel. Sex scenes are hard to do."
- Amber Heard

"I hope the audiences have a really difficult time with it. That's why I'm in this industry. I want to challenge people. I want people to think. I don't want people to just zone out and get everything that expected when they walked into the movie. The novel by Bret Easton Ellis I was a big fan of. It's dark and it's real and it's gritty and it's hard to swallow."
- Amber Heard

"It was really difficult. I always play characters so different from myself. I don't look like a character actor but that's a hundred percent what I am. I always play characters that are difficult and challenging and that's why I like them or else I would just have a normal job. [laughs]. But, the film The Informers, I'm very proud of just having seen a little bit of it and having worked on it, it was hard to film. It was hard to swallow. It's going to be really difficult for Middle America to say good things about me after that film."
- Amber Heard

"He was an amazing person and a very talented artist. One has a lot of respect for those qualities that are kind of rare. The things that tormented him and caused his passing exist everywhere in reality. You go down to the street here in Beverly Hills and there's somebody affected in the same way, by substance or escapism. It was sad though because he was an artist and he put himself in the public eye and he's going to be scrutinzed. People are going to look at him and say that the industry did this or the drugs or whatever and young people are this way. It's not just young people. It's not old people, it's not only actors. It's everybody. Everybdody knows somebody with a problem." [On Brad Renfro]
- Amber Heard

"I read the script, loved it. I said, "It's based on the novel right?" And they said, "Oh, no, no... Don't read the novel. You won't want to do the movie!" They were afraid that a girl like me would be afraid to jump into a project so dark. Little did they know, that's what I love. You know me..."
- Amber Heard

"Drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll. For everyone. It's brilliant. It's really gross – I mean that word very specifically. It's very real. It's very gritty. It's very in your face. It's about decadent, decadent Hollywood. The nastiest, beautiful thing you've ever seen. It's a hard pill to swallow, but very powerful."
- Amber Heard

"She's a bad girl. I play Christie and if I say too much, I'll give away a very important part of the film. She's very wealthy and she represents a very strong evil. She does drugs and is very promiscuous. It's like a Crash-type movie with several different storylines linked by my character."
- Amber Heard

"Not for the right project. It's my job. Not to be naked, but to tell a story. And if it's important to the story, I don't have any problem with it. I think it's silly the way society puts a high price-tag on the body. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's sad. Those remnants of religion. I don't appreciate people's conservative views on that. It's less intimidating than you think it is. It's beautiful. It's art. And I'm glad to be a part of it." [On sex and nude scenes.]
- Amber Heard

"There's a certain deadening that happens in this industry that makes it just like working with another co-worker in a sense. But they're all very talented actors." [On the huge powerhouse cast.]
- Amber Heard

Critics Quotes

Rating less than zero on the sophistication scale, The Informers is thus a totally faithful adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel -- and an accurate look at early '80s-era Los Angeles. Stumbling alongside wasted cases at the top and bottom of the economic ladder -- from Billy Bob Thornton's near-catatonic studio exec to Mickey Rourke's lollipop-sucking kidnapper -- the film is banal by obvious intent. The only question, as with other Ellis adaptations including American Psycho, is whether auds will appreciate the aggressively shallow depiction of an aggressively shallow milieu, or mistake the pic's implicit critique for the crime itself. April 10 release will tell. - Variety

Do some blow. Curse humanity. Convert to nilhilism. Reread American Psycho. But don't for the love of God and cinema see The Informers. One of the worst movies of this or any year, The Informers is a complete misreading of the collection of linked short stories by Bret Easton Ellis, which is odd since Ellis wrote the script with Nicholas Jarecki. - Rolling Stone

Aesthetically pretty, subjectively ugly, and emotionally incisive, the picture celebrates the passing of a not-so-innocent era and mourns the victims left in its wake. - TheMovieBoy.com
