Exclusive Interview: Amber Heard
From ScreenStar.com
Amber Heard has spent the last few years solidifying her career in Hollywood and these days her name is often at the top of every casting director's list. The actress is wanted for her eye-catching looks, professionalism, and her keen acting abilities that have drawn much attention as of late. The native Texan has scored some stellar roles in the past few years; she played Seth Rogen's girlfriend in Pineapple Express, shared the silver screen with Sean Farris in Never Back Down, and has a slew of Hollywood blockbusters waiting to be released. ScreenStar spoke with the actress about her onset chainsaw mishap, working with Penn Badgley, and the excitement surrounding The Stepfather.
The stunning Amber Heard has had a very busy year; she had a cameo in the runaway hit Zombieland, wrapped playing Johnny Depp's love interest in The Rum Diary, and this weekend she stars alongside Gossip Girl stud Penn Badgley. In her most current role, Heard takes on the girlfriend of Michael Harding (Penn Badgley) who returns home to find his family has accepted his mother's (Sela Ward) new boyfriend David Harris (Dylan Walsh).
While Michael bonds with his new stepfather, he begins to unravel a mystery that will forever change the dynamic of his family. ScreenStar spoke with Amber Heard who plays Kelly Porter, Michael's strong and supportive girlfriend. Heard spoke about how this film differs from horror films, shares a funny onset story, talks about getting to work with Penn again, and gave a shout out to all her fans.
ScreenStar: Can you tell us how you got involved in The Stepfather? Amber Heard: I read the script and I thought that it was a fun, young, cool, fresh, psychological thriller. I read it about two years ago and jumped on the project, it was filmed in LA and it was a lot of fun.
ScreenStar: This film is a psychological thriller more so than horror, right? Amber Heard: Yes, I would not label this film a horror film. It has the scares and other horror genre elements but it is certainly a psychological thriller. I would not call it a horror film at all.
ScreenStar: This is such an intense film; how was the chemistry onset and did things lighten up when they yelled cut? Amber Heard: The people were great; I tend to have good luck in that sense and work with good people. Part of the reason I liked filming this thriller was that you have to laugh at it all. No one takes themselves that seriously especially on these kinds of thriller/horror films. When you go to lunch, the person sitting next to you could be the person that will be chasing you with a knife in the next scene. You have to laugh at it all and you end up developing a sense of camaraderie and a real sense of team unity. We had a good time and everyone was a pleasure to work with.
ScreenStar: Are there any funny/memorable onset stories that stand out from filming The Stepfather? Amber Heard: We were filming this scene where I have to hold up a big heavy Black & Decker chain saw and in a threatening way to defend myself. While I am doing it I am screaming and crying and yelling at the person who I am threatening. In one whole scene I picked up the chain saw, did all of my lines, and went through all of the steps without ever turning on my chain saw, which was the whole point. Everybody was laughing so hard and nobody called cut because people were hysterical that I was screaming, holding the chain saw, and never turned it on.
ScreenStar: Back in 2004 you worked with your current costar Penn Badgley on the show The Mountain. Was it great reuniting and working with him again? Amber Heard: Yes, I had not seen him in a long time and he is a great guy and is really easy to be around. He is really a nice person which is rare. He is also a great actor and has a bright future in front of him.
ScreenStar: We are hearing rumors that the original Stepfather Terry O'Quinn from the 1987 film will be making a cameo. Is this true? Amber Heard: I can't say.
ScreenStar: As viewers nibble on their popcorn waiting for the film to begin, what can they expect? Amber Heard: It is a fun thriller and I think people will have a great time seeing it. It will be a lot of fun.
ScreenStar: You have some great fansites out there, do you ever frequent them? Amber Heard: I appreciate the fansites, I have a couple good ones and every once and a while someone will forward me something that they have posted. I am really thankful for them because that is a true perk of this job, having people appreciate you and what you are doing.
ScreenStar: Message to the fans. Amber Heard: Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
