"If you value a real career as an artist you value longevity, you can't sacrafice that for some publicity or a big paycheck. If I wanted to be a celebrity, it would be very easy, but I value different things."

John Carpenter fans have had a long wait between films from their favorite genre man. The director of cult favorites like Halloween, Escape From LA and The Thing has been on a hiatus of sorts but finally returns to multiplexes after a 10-year absence with this week’s The Ward.
This psychological thriller takes place in a special ward in a mental hospital and revolves around new arrival Kristen (Amber Heard), who has no idea how she ended up institutionalized. As she slowly gets to know the other patients, played by Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Lyndsy Fonseca and Laura-Leigh, she realizes they are all hiding a terrible and deadly secret.
When MTV News caught up with Carpenter and Heard to talk about their thriller, we asked how much of a creepy factor was added into the film simply by the practical effect of their filming location — an actual abandoned mental hospital.
“It was in an abandoned building on a campus with crazy people in a mental institution, the criminally insane,” Carpenter explained of their set.
“We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane,” Heard added. “We had this prime little location right between the two. We were fenced in.”

While there is yet to be a U.S. release date, the opening credits have leaked online for John Carpenter’s return to feature-length horror, The Ward, which premiered at last September’s TIFF.
“The story follows a girl (Amber Heard) who is admitted to a psychiatric ward, meets other girls there with distinct personalities and discovers a mysterious girl haunting the halls at night.”

There’s news coming in from Berlin and the 2011 European Film Market, and this is some of the best we’ve heard in a while. John Carpenter’s The Ward finally has Stateside distro!
Per Deadline London on this Day 3 of the EFM ARC Entertainment and XLrator Media Partnership have taken U.S. rights to John Carpenter’s The Ward, the cult director’s first feature since the late 90s. Amber Heard (Drive Angry 3D), Mamie Gummer (Off the Map), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th) star in this shocker set in a 60s mental institution terrorised by malevolent forces. Doug Mankoff, Andrew Spaulding of Echo Lake Entertainment (Tsotsi) produce along with Peter Block of A Bigger Boat.
The Ward is an intense psychological thriller set in a mental institution where a young woman, Kristen, is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize that this ghost might be darker than she could have imagined.

A rather bland effort at the one sheet for The Ward also made its debut today, in addition to the UK trailer posted earlier, check it out in the gallery.
Currently no US distributor has been set for the film, but the UK will receive John Carpenter’s return to feature-length horror on January 21st, 2011.
John Carpenter’s The Ward, a psychological thriller about a young woman locked in a mysterious mental institution in the 1960s, marks iconic horror master John Carpenter’s first feature film in over seven years.
Kristen (Amber Heard), a beautiful but troubled young woman, finds herself bruised, cut, drugged, and held against her will in a remote ward of a psychiatric hospital. She is completely disoriented, with no idea why she was brought to this place and no memory of her life before being admitted. All she knows is that she isn’t safe.
The other patients in the ward—four equally disturbed young women—offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and frightening sounds. It appears they are not alone.
