Note: This article suggests that The Rum Diary will be released next month but that is not the case. According to this site, the film will be released September 24.

In next month’s Hunter S. Thompson biopic, The Rum Diary, Amber Heard plays Johnny Depp’s love interest, continuing her streak of roles that require very little clothing. But the actress, best known for playing the girlfriend of Seth Rogen’s character in Pineapple Express, isn’t afraid of getting typecast as “the naked girl.”

“Some of my films have required more nudity than others,” she explained yesterday at Fashion Week’s Diesel Black Gold presentation. “But I’m not in a conservative industry and I don’t want to cater to the conservative thought that if I do a nude scene then I’ll be forever damned into a certain category.”

Wonderwall had a chance to talk to Amber at the Art of Elysium Gala. Here’s what she had to say:

With five new projects in the hopper, Amber Heard is grateful that her rising celebrity hasn’t meant every personal detail of her life gets revealed.

“I think it has been relatively easy to keep a private life and keep that life separate from my career,” she said. “I think that some people seek to be celebrities and those people will live the life that everybody reads about and knows about. I myself desire the life of a serious actor and a life like any normal person.”

I’ve added three more articles to the press archives that came out today. View some excerpts below. I also got to check out The Stepfather today and you can now read my review here on the movie’s film page. I honestly didn’t like the film but if you are interested in some thoughts from a non-biased Amber fan point of view, read away! I will be writing some of my thoughts Zombieland soon.

From: IESB.net

IESB: How comfortable are you with filming love scenes or doing nudity in films? Is that difficult for you, or does that come easy, if it’s important to the story?

Amber: As you might have noticed, I’m not afraid of nudity. I think it is absurd that it’s such a taboo in today’s world. It’s nudity, come on!

From: Screenstar.com

ScreenStar: You have some great fansites out there, do you ever frequent them?
Amber Heard: I appreciate the fansites, I have a couple good ones and every once and a while someone will forward me something that they have posted. I am really thankful for them because that is a true perk of this job, having people appreciate you and what you are doing.

ScreenStar: Message to the fans.
Amber Heard: Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Bloody-Disgusting.com, my favorite horror site, interviewed Amber and you can now check that out in the press archive.

BD: Talk about filming the “buzzsaw pendulum” scene.

Amber: It was extremely difficult, so many days in that one attic and surrounding area. Tight quarters, and very dangerous terrain. A very strange process. And the saw itself was a real saw and very heavy, for when we were doing the scenes before it falls in our face. Then they put in a rubber blade, but the weight was still there. And then the saw above me was entirely rubber, and that was OK.

BD: Great. So where the hell is Mandy Lane?

Amber: That’s a good question! That movie is as hidden from my eyes as much as everyone else. Such a disappointment; I fucking LOVE that movie. And it’s a shame it’s been caught up in such distribution hell.

Opening tomorrow is the horror/thriller The Stepfather. The film is about Penn Badgley’s (Gossip Girl) character returning home from military school and finding his mother living with a new boyfriend. As the two men get to know one another, Badgley’s character grows suspicious. As you might imagine, action ensues. Anyway, I got to speak with Amber Heard earlier today as she plays the Penn Badgley’s girlfriend in the movie. While readers of Collider know I prefer doing video interviews, Amber was only available for phoners, so that’s how this was done.

During our short conversation, Heard talked about making The Stepfather, doing a cameo in Zombieland (she played the hot neighbor in the beginning of the film), and she also talked about playing Johnny Depp’s girlfriend in next year’s The Rum Dairy. Our conversation after the jump:

Being chased and terrorized by a rage-driven psychopath around and under a house would seem to be a pretty stressful situation, even if it’s just for a movie. But for Amber Heard, the young actress who co-stars in Screen Gems’ new remake of The Stepfather, it was all in a day’s work. “You know, it’s just like any aspect of my job,” she says of taking part in such cinematic mayhem. “It could be very weird, but because it’s so weird so often, it becomes very, very…unweird, if that makes sense. My job is funny that way, in that I come to set every day and there are plenty of crazy things going on. That’s not really one of them that sticks out.”

This statement won’t surprise anyone who has been following Heard’s career over the last few years. After attracting a wealth of positive attention in the title role of the slasher opus All The Boys Love Mandy Lane—albeit largely at festivals, since a commercial U.S. release remains stalled by distributor Senator Entertainment’s money problems—she has been all over the horror scene lately. She cuddles up to Jesse Eisenberg and then tries to eat his flesh in the current hit Zombieland, just wrapped a starring role in John Carpenter’s latest chiller The Ward and not only acted but served as a producer on another recently lensed redux, And Soon The Darkness.

As we previously reported, Amber Heard takes her 9th cover on the Texas monthly magazine Envy! We’re treated to a new shoot and interview. In the gallery you’ll now find digital scans which we will replace once we’re able to add higher quality versions. Enjoy!

“The most fascinating part of my job is the unknown, the fact that I can’t plan it. I love that I don’t know where I will be next week. I will be filming this movie [The Ward]; however, I don’t know what scenes I will do. I don’t know if I’ll be jumping through a plate glass window or setting a barn on fire. I don’t know if I will be crying and screaming or if I will be running from a murderer. This is the part of life that I think is dulled down by normal 9-to-5s—that unexpected excitement. In the long run, I have no idea what country I will be in; in one year, I don’t know where I will be in my life. That’s the whole point.”

Have you heard about Amber Heard? With one of TIFF’s most buzzed-about films, and another on the way, you will.

Amber Heard went about landing the lead role in the movie based on Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary, opposite Johnny Depp and Aaron Eckhart, the old-fashioned way. She applied in writing for it.

It seems a fitting way to go about it, considering that, like Depp, the 23-year-old Texas-born actress is a true-blue gonzo groupie.

“I’m a huge fan of Hunter S. Thompson,” the fast-rising star explained as she sat in a shady corner of a Yorkville hotel patio this week. “He was one of a kind and he has affected me throughout my whole life, since I could read.

“As soon as I heard about the movie, I wrote letters to the director (Bruce Robinson) and producers involved.”

In the notes, Heard explained that she, a lifelong passionate fan of the renegade reporter, was born to play Chenault in the story Thompson penned while in his 20s and based on his booze-soaked time as a reporter in Puerto Rico. And in doing so, she beat out one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies for the part, Scarlett Johannsen.
