"If you value a real career as an artist you value longevity, you can't sacrafice that for some publicity or a big paycheck. If I wanted to be a celebrity, it would be very easy, but I value different things."

'The Rum Diary'

It was announced today at CinemaCon, by Bob Berney, President, Theatrical Distribution that FilmDistrict will release The Rum Diary, based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel that was ultimately published in 1998. It stars Johnny Depp and will be released on October 28, 2011. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail and I) from his own screenplay and also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. The Rum Diary is produced by Infinitum Nihil, the production company headed by Depp and Christi Dembrowski, along with Graham King and Tim Headington. Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis also produce.

The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s The Lost Generation, Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

“Hunter S. Thompson became close with Johnny Depp during the filming of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and showed Depp the unpublished manuscript for The Rum Diary,” says producer and FilmDistrict co-founder Graham King. “I am extremely proud to bring this novel to film and to honor Hunter’s legacy.”

'Drive Angry'

Drive Angry will look to bounce back from an abysmal box office performance when it shifts gears and heads to home video on May 31.

The release date comes courtesy of Amazon.com who is listing separate 2D and 3D versions of the R-rated thriller starring Nicholas Cage, Amber Heard and Billy Burke. If a Blu-ray 3D version of Drive Angry is released it will mark the first foray into the Blu-ray 3D market by distributor Summit Entertainment.

In case you’re wondering how poorly Drive Angry performed at the box office, it only managed to attract $5.2 million its opening weekend in late February including surcharges from 3D ticket prices. Overall the film only brought in $15 million from worldwide ticket receipts.

The lead in the NBC drama pilot Playboy is being recast.

Third Watch alum Eddie Cibrian has been tapped for the role, replacing Jeff Hephner, who landed the part last week after a marathon of auditions. The decision was made after the pilot’s table read. Sources close to the show say that Hephner, who had never played a major role on a series before, was great in the tests and the producers love him as an actor but he didn’t work out in the pilot, whose cast includes Laura Benanti, Amber Heard, Naturi Naughton and David Krumholtz. Cibrian is expected start immediately as Playboy is slated to begin filming in Chicago on Tuesday.

Playboy, from 20th Century Fox TV, Imagine TV and writer-executive producer Chad Hodge, is set at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1963. It centers on Nick Dalton (Cibrian), described as “the ultimate playboy.” He is an attorney in Chicago and a Keyholder at the glamorous, exclusive Playboy Club. A fixer who knows how to make problems disappear, he has mysterious ties to the mob. The pilot, directed by Alan Taylor, also co-stars Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Leah Renee and Wes Ramsey.

Cibrian recently co-starred on CSI: Miami for a season and did an arc on NBC’s freshman drama Chase this season.

Former Numb3rs star David Krumholtz is set for a co-starring role in NBC’s drama pilot Playboy.

In the project — set at the Playboy Club in Chicago circa 1963 — Krumholtz will play the club’s general manager, a young Albert Brooks-esque bottom-line kind of guy.

The cast also includes Amber Heard (Zombieland), Naturi Naughton (Fame) and Laura Benanti (Eli Stone) as Playboy bunnies.

Krumholtz is also developing Igotchaback, a half-hour single-camera comedy for FX about an up-and-coming music industry manager tasked with representing an aging rap star mired knee-deep in an existential crisis. It’s loosely based on the lives of Wu Tang Clan founding member GZA and his publicist Heathcliff Berru. Krumholtz is executive producing and may star.
