John Carpenter fans have had a long wait between films from their favorite genre man. The director of cult favorites like Halloween, Escape From LA and The Thing has been on a hiatus of sorts but finally returns to multiplexes after a 10-year absence with this week’s The Ward.
This psychological thriller takes place in a special ward in a mental hospital and revolves around new arrival Kristen (Amber Heard), who has no idea how she ended up institutionalized. As she slowly gets to know the other patients, played by Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Lyndsy Fonseca and Laura-Leigh, she realizes they are all hiding a terrible and deadly secret.
When MTV News caught up with Carpenter and Heard to talk about their thriller, we asked how much of a creepy factor was added into the film simply by the practical effect of their filming location — an actual abandoned mental hospital.
“It was in an abandoned building on a campus with crazy people in a mental institution, the criminally insane,” Carpenter explained of their set.
“We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane,” Heard added. “We had this prime little location right between the two. We were fenced in.”

Check out this video that features fresh interviews with the cast of Syrup, including Amber Heard, Kellan Lutz and Shiloh Fernandez.
Kellan Lutz stars alongside one-time Hump Day Hottie Shiloh Fernandez, who finds himself hopelessly in love with leading lady Amber Heard.
“I work opposite Shiloh, he plays my love interest,” Amber said. “He is a driven young man who falls hopelessly in love with the wrong girl and will stop at nothing to get her, and she will stop at nothing to get to the top.”
So does Shiloh get the girl?
“In the end he has a moral decision about whether or not he wants to be a part of this advertising world and he chooses… I guess I shouldn’t give away the ending,” Shiloh teased, ultimately revealing that love does conquer all.

After being dumped by NBC’s affiliate in Salt Lake City earlier this month, upcoming fall drama The Playboy Club has found a new home in the conservative Utah state capital.
The My Network affiliate KMYU will air the soapy drama, which stars Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard in a 1960s-set club where crooners, mob bosses and politicians mingle among Chicago’s elite.
The move, which was first reported by TV Guide, follows a mid-June decision by KSL-TV to opt out of airing the drama because of objectionable content. At the time, the Utah station, which has ties to the Mormon Church, argued that the series didn’t fit with its mission.

NBC’s Salt Lake City affiliate has opted against airing the network’s upcoming fall drama The Playboy Club, citing objectionable content.
The series, to be shot in Chicago, takes place in a 1960s nightspot where crooners, mob bosses and politicians mingle among the city’s elite. Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard star.
“The Playboy brand is known internationally,” KSL-TV president and CEO Mark Willes said in a statement. “We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for…” The station is owned by Deseret Media Companies, controlled by the Mormon church.
